PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT

OUR ENVIRONMENT

"No Excuse for Single Use"

Orchard's ongoing project and environmental commitment

We have all seen the terrible pictures depicting our waste plastics in the sea and how plastics affect our beaches and wildlife. As a staff team, we decided it was time to do something positive for the environment and reduce our plastic waste at nursery, so along with the children (of course) we have made positive steps to reduce our waste, to increase our recycling and to make changes that will positively improve our environmental footprint.

Here are just some of our changes....

Since January 2019....
  • We have replaced our blue plastic 'single use' aprons (used at meal times) with blue fabric aprons.
  • We have replaced our white plastic 'single use' aprons (used at nappy changes) for a wipeable PVC apron.
  • We have halved our use of plastic 'single use' gloves and will be further reducing.
  • We have more than halved our use of nappy sacks as we no longer 'double bag'.
  • We have reduced our deliveries of resources and consumables to once per month.
  • We have stopped using washing detergents, and now wash all bedding, towels and clothes using an 'Eco Egg'
  • We are committed to turning off lights when they are not required and reducing our use of air conditioning.
  • We are teaching the children about recycling and how to care for our planet.

We still have more to do...

We continue to review and minimise the effects the nursery has on the environment and are committed to further enhancing our environmental performance by finding sustainable ways to avoid, mitigate or satisfactorily control and manage any potential adverse environmental impact.
